Thanks. I kind of have the same feeling as you, but at the same time, a banner is only supposed to "set the stage," and simplicity makes the most impact and makes it the most memorable because otherwise, then it just becomes hogwash. Professional design is usually much simpler than amateur work because the goal is to communicate and make an impression, whereas ammeters feel the need to overcompensate and load up the canvas with more and more stuff. Not to say there bad at it, it's just that they try to put too much art in areas where it really isn't needed. It comes down to determining the purpose.
This is what I did with the dimensions of the current banner. Spacing of the elements are a little off but eh, just mockups. I may want to up the brightness and contrast too.
