Mono Lake, California; Site of the bacteria used to make the arsenic based life-form
The big news from NASA's press event left the gate a little early this morning, but it's every bit as exciting as we'd hoped. We may not have found a new life form on another planet, but better yet, there's one right under our noses.
The finding, spearheaded by Biochemist Dr. Felisa Wolfe-Simon, asserts that the building blocks of life as we know them are no more. The researcher made the monumental discovery by studying bacteria from the arsenic-rich Mono Lake in California. By gradually swapping out the bacteria's store of phosphorus for arsenic, the bacteria eventually substituted one of the heretofore essential elements of living organisms with a toxic one.
