Police in Chile have arrested four people for burning alive a newborn baby during a sacrifice ritual, including the infant’s own mother. The baby was burned alive in a bonfire because a sect leader believed the infant was the antichrist, Fox News reported April 26.
The four suspects were arrested by police in Chile on Thursday, accused of burning to death the three-day old baby. Among those arrested was the baby's mother, 25-year-old Natalia Guerra, who police say had approved the sacrifice of her newborn baby and allowed the infant to be burned in the ritual.
The baby was thrown into a bonfire on Nov. 21 in the town of Colliguay near the Chilean port of Valparaiso.
The sect leader, identified as Ramon Gustavo Castillo Gaete, 36, said that the world was coming to an end and that the newborn was the antichrist. He wanted the baby sacrificed. The sect leader who was behind the baby’s sacrifice remains at large, police said.
The small sect, apparently with just 12 members, was formed in 2005. Police said that everyone in the religious sect were professional business people with university degrees, including a veterinarian who worked as a flight attendant, a filmmaker and a draftsman.
“The baby was naked. They strapped tape around her mouth to keep her from screaming,” said Miguel Ampuero, of the Police investigative Unit, Chile's equivalent of the FBI. “Then they placed her on a board. After calling on the spirits they threw her on the bonfire alive.”
