Nationalism/patriotism

Postby Minimii » Aug 10th, '13, 19:50

Isnt that shit just stupid?
You are born in a country, and as if it was some kind of achievement you start thinking that you have some sort of inherent right to the land you were born in, so that if immigrants flood "your" country you start feeling threatened and say stuff like "my country" or "our culture" blah blah.
Now, the way i see it, if someone actually does something to get somewhere, then that person deserves it more than a person who just was born in that place.

Also to me patriotism is the same thing as loving your government officials and/or the ground which is inside the borders of your country. It makes about 0 sense.
Fuck all nations.

Patriotism has nothing to do with loving goverment officials. Patriotism is when you are not indifferent to your Motherland, when you are actually give a fuck whats happening with it. Dont mix up the "Motherland" with "Country where you live/was born".

But your "motherland" is nothing more than people who rule it, it laws and borders.
If you live in USA: would you accept merging usa with canada even if nothing would ever change because of that.
Probably not.

I understand being thankful that you are born in a certain place (if it's a 1st world country) but you have no right to take any pride in your country or your nationality.
It should be a thing of the past.

So you dont feel any "national identity". For you netherlands and germany is the same? if you catch my drift.

No. Again, dont mix up the term "motherland" with "country/goverment". Those are completely different things. Just try to understand this.

Yes and no. There's nothing wrong with having pride in your country, but when it reaches the "My country is so much better than anyone's else's", we have problems.

wow, never thought of it like that.

but, when you think about it, most people born in the US or whatever country have ancestors that worked towards making the country what it is.

so, just like that, people feel entitled to say stuff like "my country."

imagine if you had claimed land through hard work and years of dedication, then suddenly had foreigners enter, how would you feel?

To have pride in your country is absurd. It's not like you made it, you just happened to born there, and this kind of "pride" can be harmful too especially with immigration, especially in the times of crisis (#Greece).

I mean it's not like getting completely rid of national pride would solve world's problems but it wouldnt be bad either.

It's not just patriotism when invasion occurs with sole purpose of overthrowing government, destructing culture and causing conflict.
It's also not just patriotism when new law and order is enforced as a result.

Immigration is one thing, invasion and demanding changes in law rather than tolerance within laws is what upsets people I think.

Patriotism is ALL about carrying for the good of the people of the said country. Has nothing to do with governments, history, and all that other shit. In other words, governments should be criticized for everything that doesn't go in the people's favor, and loving your country doesn't mean jerking off to its flag or a falsified history book.

Of course, common sense alert here, people will rationalize the worst shit ever as if they're doing something good. When the USA is killing tons of innocent people out there for example, the president and his buddies think it's all good and stuff. So, with morals in mind and hidden agendas aside, you know what is about right, and what is about wrong, so the people's interest is worth it as long as harm isn't done to others.

And yes, the starting point should always be yourself. Waiting on others (aka the government) to take care of your life isn't the way to go. Action must be taken.
