No word is really offensive.

If I said:

"The word nigger disparages a whole race and should be used with caution"

and

"What the hell are you wearing, faggot? A gay pride badge? I don't know any faggots who should be proud of anything, you're an abomination!"

Obviously one is much more offensive that the other. Words alone aren't offensive, it's the context in which they are used that makes them offensive.
