Name - Kez
Age - 19
Years Active - 6
Bio - From around age 13, i began writing songs. Admittedly, many of them were heavily influenced by Eminem and some were blatant ripoffs, but i did it to cope with the heavy amount of drama that found its way towards me in my school life. I'm not sure why i did it, i can never really pinpoint it, all i know is that i have always wanted to do it. The summer of 2006 saw me venture into recording, and this continued with me travelling to sites like Let's Beef and putting up some abysmal battle replies (seriously if you search Let's Beef you can probably find a couple). I really didn't have much grip, i was simply doing it because something drove me to.
Late 2006 saw the very foolish release of my first ever real demo/mixtape. I don't know why, as someone with little practice, i decided to make a CD of about 6 tracks and publicly release it around school, but that's exactly what i did. In hindsight, it's a good thing because it got introductions out of the way, but i'm amazed at how readily i gave it out. Perhaps i expected positive reactions? Whatever i expected, what i got was laughs, and rightfully so, as the material was hilariously bad. I had no real style, so i grabbed a bunch of beats from Soundclick (Specifically Passion Hifi) and wrote Eminem-style shit. Anyway once i got over it i worked on another "album", which i called Apockalypse Now from an inside joke and released close to the end of 2006. This album contained mostly random tracks on official instrumentals and again wasn't really anything special; i will always remember that this album caused MC Maybe to tell me to quit lmao. And he was right, cause at the time it was the case. Unfortunately pretty much all this album has been lost to the ages, however the thread still exists and is an entertaining read.
Anyway, following the release of this i had my first feature on someone else's tape; Bar's Fuck The System EP, on the track "The Racist Thought". Following this Big Ax-D contacted me asking to work with me, and we made two tracks which would begin our long collaborative efforts: "When You Hear That" and "Lock and Load"; they weren't amazing, we were still both new to it, but you could hear the remnants of skill there. While this was happening, i was plotting my third album, which i intended to be a distance from my previous two failed projects. I decided to name it Third Time Lucky for this purpose, and set to work, using Soundclick beats from places like Rapitfly Beats, which had only just emerged at the time; i wanted to deviate from my previous lyrical content of hate, but ironically Third Time Lucky proved to be the biggest example of this. Every song was about it, just set to a different beat. Third Time Lucky proved to be a flop, with about 2 people leaving feed and pretty much nobody hearing it. Third Time Lucky was released in mid-2007, and it was following it that i had in my mind the desire for my next album to be a success which i had so far not achieved.
During and following Third Time Lucky's production, me and Big Ax-D collaborated on joint mixtape The Most Annoying, a mixtape generally created to be a big "fuck you" to people trying to complain about our quality, content etc. It was, again, nothing amazing, because we were new to it, but The Most Annoying contains some gems, such as the amazing "My World" which is one of the deepest tracks ever to hit TR in my opinion, and my solo track "Easily Forgotten" to the bump of a vintage Mister KA beat, which some considered to mark a change from previous matter. My voice had started to develop, delivery becoming sharper, with the hook being noted particularly for being well-targeted. The Most Annoying was released several months following Third Time Lucky, and also proved to not be much of a success.
It was post-The Most Annoying that things started to change around my personal life. I was now in my final year of high school not long after The Most Annoying came out, and was beginning to feel the pressure of finishing a state where i did not have to be responsible. Up to that point, my music had been an indulgence, something i could easily afford to do with no worry. But it was creeping closer, and, although i didn't have dreams that i would blow up and be the next big name rapper, i still didn't want to be stuck in a crap job and unable to follow my music. So with this situation, combined with my desire to actually make a decent album, the next five or six months were spent working on my fourth album.
I remember working on this album and trying to make sure i had a lot of different styles included. Early on i made chill-out song "Daydream", and Ax provided me with the token "fast rap" song "Going Insane". There was the emotional closer of "Last Words" with the remix element of "Fuck What You Think" as a finale. It was from this mindset that i decided to name the album Universal, to represent an attempt to involve as many different elements as i could. While i was working on Universal i got recruited to join United Rhymers Division by Ax, and we began to work on The Prequel mixtape at the same time.
Universal was released in early December 2007, the product of half a year's work and a focused mindset. This was my first full, concentrated, original album. While the second album also contained 20 tracks, most of them were official instrumentals and one was an acapella randomly thrown in. Third Time Lucky had the original concepts and lyrics but fell short at around 14 (from a 20 i originally had). I like to feel i hit a decent level with Universal; it at least recieved more attention than anything i had previously made, and i was personally satisfied with the result. It was not long after the release of Universal that i performed live for the first time at a school talent show (gay i know), and this is an experience that would mark my music forever.
However, there was no time to sit and bask in the glow, as from then i simply continued working on The Prequel with URD. This was released around two months later, and you can sense the feel of Universal in most of my verses, however it had a distance too. The Prequel is, in my opinion, easily one of the best collaborative efforts to hit TR; i know This Means War had TR's biggest talent, but to my knowledge they never really ever made a big album/tape? The Prequel had the perfect mix, from brag track "One Million" to my remix of "Razorblade Salvation", which is still one of my favourite tracks i ever did, to the raging "Outro" track which i can distinctly remember recording in one take after coming home pissed off. The Prequel also recieved favourable reception, and URD did set to work on the second album, but as we all know it never materialised. We would release the currently lost Hate Us Love Us and Let's Go mixtapes, but these were mainly remix albums, with throwaway tracks and the occasional original.
Following The Prequel mixtape i continued to work on my music, but the previously mentioned lifestyle was beginning to change. Prequel was released in Febuary; 4 months later, high school was going to be pretty much finished. It was with thoughts of this on my mind that i made "This is the End" in late March. The next few months followed with me attempting to elevate, try out new things; ultimately this obsession with hitting my highest peak led to me saying nothing was good enough, which would delay my next project for a very long time. I released "Look Inside Yourself" a couple months after "This is the End" as a show off that i had improved, and continued work on the beta titled "Universal part II". At the same time i was trying to work on "The Most Annoying II" as well, resulting in the release of "Can't Get Enough" around the same time, which didn't meet to massive acclaim.
That summer didn't see much music from me; it was the summer i finished high school, i had things on my mind like my future, and apart from that i decided to take a break to enjoy life and shit like that. I came back in September with a canned track from Universal part II, and late October saw the release of Big Ax-D's "The Secret 08" which contained the last three verses from me anyone would hear for a while. Thanks to hardware problems, i wasn't in a position to make music for the next 9 or so months, and so all was silent.
Following my acquiring of a new computer in early May, i set to work immediately on my long overdue fifth album, as of then untitled. I got myself back into the groove with a now lost collab with MC Anonymous and the release of "Mr. Kez", supposed to be my debut song. It didn't meet massive acclaim, however it was noted that my time out of audio had benefited me. The following half a year i spent relatively quietly, working on my fifth album which i eventually decided to call Breakout. I called it this because from my time out of audio i had become more motivated than ever to reach the next step in my musical career; live performance, and local recognition. My music had never previously hit local areas, mostly just from me not feeling myself ready, but with this album i felt i needed to reach the step where i could "break out" of just being an Internet rapper and start doing real life performance. I also called it Breakout because i wanted to "break out" of the previous content of my albums, which were mostly self-involved retrospect about hate; "If You Could Only Imagine" sums this up perfectly, with the acknowledgement that, although i'm aware of the repetition of "another self-absorbed rap anthem", you still don't know what it's like to deal with and sometimes it's just neccessary.
Breakout was released March 19th 2010, almost 3 years after Third Time Lucky, and met a decent reception, with local artists taking interest and recognition being recieved.
Following the release of Breakout, my real life was beginning to change. Finishing my college study I was given the opportunity to go to University, and I of course jumped at this chance. Before I went, I wanted to make one more tape as a kind of farewell, because I could tell that if I went to University the opportunity to record music would be hard to come by. So Anticlimax was released in September 2010, some of the tracks being from a few months back when I finished College, and some from about a week before as it dawned on me where I was heading. I didn't really have any particular "hopes" for this tape, I just made it.
At University, it was a whole new way of life for me, and music was obviously born out of this. Long story short I hated University and so I dropped out. I had recorded a bunch of tracks for this album when I came back home for Christmas, and I could see an album taking shape. When I dropped out, I finished off some remaining tracks for my album Unwelcome Back, a very deep affair, which I released in April 2011.
After this, I set to work on the sequel to the first Most Annoying with Big Ax-D. It was made really in an effort on my part to enjoy making music a bit more again, along with the obvious intent to just make more good shit. We started work on it in like April and it was out by June. It seemed to get a decent enough reception.
At the moment i'm working on a tape with a producer from this site named Rise From The Ashez. The best way to describe this project would probably be that it's even darker than Unwelcome Back, but in a different way. It's on some very soft horrorcore kind of stuff. Over half the album is already finished, so i'm confident it'll be out by the end of 2011.
I'm also slowly working on my next solo album, which is going to be a spiritual sequel to Universal from 2007. At the moment, it's looking likely that it'll go by the name "Coming of Age."
