How do you enhance your singing abilities on the mic?

I've been told I'm a good singer, but the mic always seems to make it sound amateur.

How do you enhance singing on the mic, through both the actual singing and the recording/mixing?

I suppose if you want to fix up the singing, try downloading a pirated copy of Melodyne. Layering also helps.
