Well it is in Belgium. I dont really have anything against it, you can always vote 'invalid'.

So they make it mandatory to go down to the voting booths but once you're there they give you the option not to vote? Seems like a strange process.

Well they dont really "give you the option". You can just fuck up the ballot or leave in blank tbh. But idk if that's possible now theyre doing it with computers..

Fair enough. That's how it's done here, too.

No way voting should be mandatory. Some people just don't give a fuck about politics and if they voted randomly or sth it could end up really bad. Of course you can always ruin that voting paper so no one gets the your vote.

Oh stupid people can fail with the computers too. A spanish political was trying to vote for himself, but he failed and his vote was null.
But this is another thing why voting shouldn't be mandatory, if someone don't want to vote , don't make the person go there just to fuck up the ballot.

There's always a reason to bitch about or rather criticize the current government because they all do stupid shit, specially in America. And if I can pick between two evils, why should I vote? The lesser evil isn't that much of a condolence. Also, it comes down to what you do and how you act, you can't leave or blame everything on the government, even if it's a heaven-sent one. If you vote for party X, and party X wins, that doesn't mean that your efforts should stop. So if I don't vote but my actions do well for me or my community, or simply the people I know and my surroundings, I've done waaaaaay more than a person who has voted but doesn't do shit with his life.

What are you going to do when the person you didn't vote for takes away your right to do shit for yourself and surroundings?

Nobody can take away your good will, hard work or knowledge. Plus, I think that if party A can do damage which is a 10 on a "we're fucked" scale, then party B can probably do nothing better than an 8.

There are couple of conditions for elections to be considered democratic, and there have been states and times when things have been fucked up beyond repair, and people have been put through horrifying situations. However, if we consider normal societies i.e. states where the conditions for democratic elections have been fulfilled then voting doesn't make that much of a difference, and with the right actions people can make it through the bullshit. Like for example, people in the New York ghettos have been put trough hell, but then again you have Nas and you have the local drug dealer. Choosing the right path can make a huge difference.

Yeah I don't think NY in the 80's and 90's is really an example of how little freedom people had.

Where are you? In Anerica I thought being fined for not voting is illegal. It's a choice, not something you should be forced to do.
