Tips on how to get Better at Video Games

I was better at the side scroller/arcade style games, which aren't mainstream anymore. But I have a pretty short attention span when playing video games these days. I love the graphics and everything, but I can't figure out how to do anything. I get lost and don't know where to go. This is why I could never play more than five minutes of COD. How important is it to understand the storyline or watch the introductions?

Thinking of getting a PS4 or X Box one just to enamor the graphics. But no good if I don't know what to do. Any way to get better at these games or improve your ability to figure out where to go when you're lost in games? Honestly, I feel that the level of critical thinking you have to do for the games is just as complex as playing in a reality tv show like Lost or Survivor.

Apply the intelligence you display in your posts, its not rocket science. If children have no problems navigating these games then you shouldn't either. If you get stuck on a certain game, then you could always ask Google

I'm generally pretty good at any type of video game I can get into the game pretty easily and know what to do. I mean I love puzzle games so critical thinking is not an issue. haha

2 games I have owned for a year on Xbox 360 include Stealth Assassins and Bioshock. When playing both games, I get completely lost. I'm not great with sense of direction, lol. Even after hours of Stealth Assassins, I couldn't decipher where to go.
