My man
EOM is a really good producer.
K-Def and the 45 King really need no introduction, but here’s a little background for those who may be unfamiliar. In addition to his solo catalog of ill instrumental projects, K-Def has produced for the likes of Lords Of The Underground, Diddy, Ghostface Killah, and plenty of others. As for the 45 King, his reach is beyond-impressive, too. The Bronx native most famously worked with Jay Z (“Hard Knock Life”) and Eminem (“Stan”), but he’s banged out ill-as-hell remixes for everyone from Madonna to Digital Underground.
With their résumés in mind, it’s pretty wild to K-Def and the 45 King got together, right? Yeah, Redefinition Records thought so, too. They learned of the two’s friendship and instantly asked if they could release something from the duo. Enter Back To The Beat, a raw 12-track album loaded to the brim with samples, neck-snapping percussion, and everything else you’d want from these guys. While most of the cuts are in the realm of head-nodding burners—”Leopard” and “Cheetah,” especially—K-Def and the 45 King flirt with other styles, too. “Chances Taken” sounds like a remix from your favorite keys-centric jazz record while “Taste” is the definition of a straight-up banger. Put simply: Back To The Beat is a must-listen for hip-hop heads.
