I think that The Simpsons accused Family Guy of biting in the beginning so there had always been a little bit of tension with them. I don't think I've ever watched King of The Hill so I can't comment. But it's not just about being ridiculous. All of them get ridiculous. But you can have ridiculous events happen within a reasonably well written plot with decent character development.

South Park is satire. I think it's when people would compare the two shows that it would piss them off the most.

Make sense, I think it's just because I hold Family Guy in a higher regard that most do. I have a wide range for the humor that I can appreciate, so I guess I just like dumb humor lol. That's on me I guess. I still dont think it's as bad as people make it out to be, Family Guy can have some interesting plots ( I.e. And then there were fewer). But South Park is the only one of those shows that I think can be truly brilliant, it does satire really well.

I could see why the comparisons would be frustrating for the South Park creators because they do the most intelligent work, and mislabeling South Park as just dumb humor would be insulting. Trey Parker and Matt Stone do dislike Seth though, and I do find it weird that they dislike him so much. But I do kind of see why.

see i'm not really a fan of juvenile comedy and family guy still appeals to me. they don't seem to do it nearly as much as say american dad or futurama, especially if you remove quagmire's character all together. he does nothing for me, like todd from scrubs or packer from the office.

Lol they set a record for basic cable history in 1998 with 6.2 million viewers.

100% shock value. it would not have the same effect in today's media, aside from the edginess the show was utter shit. it relied upon that and absolutely nothing else, the shit was barely even animated.

By 2008 they had already tackled Catholicism, the Mormons, "psychics", NAMBLA, Jews, Pokemon, Scientologists, American democracy, Euthanasia, Rob Reiner...

so in 11 years they touched on 10 "edgy" subjects. and the emboldened ones don't even count since they were already subjects of scrutiny in the comedy world by then. the only reason scientology counts is because they have real personnel that track people down and interrogate them in public with trained tactics, it's creepy shit.

my man. i love the writing of that show, you can tell their formula is to just write the most stumbly, awkward, inconclusive banter possible between the characters. and they execute it beautifully.

Edit: I agree that it has gotten more complicated and fine-tuned over the years, and that it was more simplistic back then, I just fully disagree that it was complete shit then. But it is significantly better now than it used to be.

South Park seasons 4-11 are some of the best tv ever and just genius episode after genius episode. Since then it's been really hit or miss and have had just a lot of really unfunny episodes although some great ones have been sprinkled in. It's prime was a lot smarter and tackled concepts in a much funnier way without being so obvious about it. It's really undeniable and just so fitting that elision thinks they're worst work is their best work and thinking their older stuff is just shock value is just he same old tale of things going over his head. Probably thinks the simpsons is better than ever too
